When the boys from Blind Channel were starting out in Oulu, a city seven hours north of Helsinki, dreams of becoming an internationally successful band, lead vocalist Niko Vilhelm recalls how many people around them told them not to do so because it would never happen. Rather than be discouraged, the group set their sights on accomplishing their lofty goals, with a common aspiration amongst most people who start a band to become the biggest one in the world. And after filling stadiums throughout Europe, performing on Eurovision, touring North America and Japan, and receiving their first platinum record, Blind Channel are doing quite well at proving their northern madness goal of conquering the world may not as far off base as some may have once thought.

Despite their rapid ascent in recent years, aided by smart songwriting and promotion, the group made a conscious decision to hit the brakes on that pursuit. After a long, successful run in 2024 supporting and promoting Exit Emotions, Blind Channel imposed an indefinite hiatus for all band activities except for one, which is perhaps the most important of all: writing music. Without constant touring and media obligations, and set deadlines of any kind, the band embarked on a journey to write viewing themselves for first time for as artists, as opposed to merely delivering a product for consumption. During this time, however, founding member and co-vocalist Joel Hokka left the band amicably to pursue other opportunities, causing a realignment of responsibilities within Blind Channel and adding another degree of difficulty. Despite the additional hurdle, the results from their newfound approach were quite fruitful, with Niko even revealing that for the first time band members were openly speaking about liking and disliking certain songwriting styles and approaches.

The results of this rejuvenated approach to not only music, but themselves, after that indefinite hiatus is Painstream, the group’s sixth album that will be released on October 30th through Century Media Records. Ahead of its release, I had a chance to speak with Niko about these things, and much more, including:
- the reasons for their indefinite hiatus in late 2024, the relaxation and inspiration he felt from returning to Oulu during that time, the departure of Joel Hokka and how it affected the group, and how they knew it was time to return.
- how Painstream became their heaviest album to date, the lyrical theme revolving around pain and how he came to write about that topic, how they examined it from a number of interesting angles, and the importance of the album’s tracklisting.
- a new perspective in the band of approaching their work as art as opposed to a product, their rare double single that was released in August, collaborating with Aaron Pauley from Of Mice and Men after a case of mistaken identity, and Niko’s feelings on his development as a metal singer.
- a brief discussion of his rap background and an Eminem cover, Blind Channel’s recent performance at the legendary Finnvox Studios in Helsinki, tour plans for North America, and reflection about the group’s global domination goal in light of their recent hiatus.

Niko was a pleasure to speak with and very reflective about the band’s journey to this point and what the future holds. Though they’ve gained a bit of perspective over last couple of years by hitting pause on their conquest of the rock and metal universe, when asked about whether or not their goal of becoming the biggest band in the world, Niko supplied a succinct, affirmative, and emphatic response: “Hell yeah!”
