STRAPPED DOWN IN TORONTO! DOWN DELIVERS A CRUSHING NIGHT AT HISTORY

Toronto was treated to a night of crushing riffs, heavy grooves and Southern metal attitude as DOWN brought their Strap It DOWN Tour ’26 to HISTORY on Sunday night, with Helmet and Spirit In The Room joining the lineup.

The timing couldn’t have been better. Just days before arriving in Toronto, DOWN announced their long-awaited new studio album, Volume V, set for release November 20 through Nuclear Blast Records, along with the first single, “Blood Oath.”

But on this night, it was the live show that mattered.

DOWN Take Over HISTORY

HISTORY proved to be an ideal venue for DOWN. The packed venue created an intense, almost club-like atmosphere as fans gathered to hear one of the most influential bands to emerge from the New Orleans metal scene.

Spirit In The Room opened the night with a dark, atmospheric performance that immediately drew the audience into the evening. Their sound added a brooding edge to the lineup, combining heavy guitars with a more spacious, immersive approach. It was a strong introduction to the night and helped establish the weighty, uncompromising mood that carried through the rest of the show.

Helmet followed with a focused and forceful set that showcased the band’s distinctive blend of alternative metal, post-hardcore tension and tightly controlled groove. Their heavy, angular riffs sounded especially powerful in the room, while the band’s disciplined performance gave the set a sharp, driving intensity. Helmet brought a different kind of heaviness to the bill—less rooted in Southern sludge and more defined by precision, repetition and sheer momentum—but they fit naturally into the night’s overall atmosphere.

When DOWN finally hit the stage, the venue erupted.

Philip H. Anselmo, Pepper Keenan, Kirk Windstein, Jimmy Bower and Pat Bruders showed exactly why DOWN have remained such a powerful live band for more than 30 years.

The band’s chemistry was obvious throughout the performance. Anselmo commanded the stage while Keenan and Windstein delivered massive guitar riffs, backed by the thunderous rhythm section of Bower and Bruders.

The set was packed with DOWN favorites, giving longtime fans plenty to celebrate. Songs like “Lifer,” “Hail the Leaf,” “Ghosts Along the Mississippi,” “Temptation’s Wings,” “Rehab,” “Stone the Crow” and “Eyes of the South” brought the crowd right back to the band’s classic era.

There was no need for elaborate production. DOWN’s music has always been about the riffs, the groove and the chemistry between the musicians—and all three were on full display in Toronto.

A Taste of What’s Next

With Volume V on the horizon, fans also got a taste of the band’s next chapter with “Blood Oath.”

The new track fits comfortably alongside DOWN’s classic material, built around a massive riff and a memorable chorus while retaining the band’s unmistakable New Orleans character.

It’s been more than a decade since DOWN released their last studio album, Down IV – Part Two, making Volume V one of the most anticipated releases of the band’s career.

The album will feature ten tracks, including the previously released “Blood Oath,” “The Myth,” “Merciful Fate,” “Ozz” and “Twice-Told Tales.” One of the most unexpected moments on the record will be “Merciful Fate,” which features a guest appearance from King Diamond.

For now, however, Toronto got a reminder of what DOWN does best: delivering heavy music with plenty of soul and attitude.

A Night to Remember

From the opening riffs to the final notes, DOWN’s HISTORY performance felt like a celebration of everything that has kept the band relevant for more than three decades.

Their music may be rooted in the New Orleans scene of the early 1990s, but songs written decades ago still sounded enormous in a Toronto venue in 2026.

The Strap It DOWN Tour ’26 continues across North America, with upcoming dates including Montreal, Worcester, Scranton, Wantagh, Silver Spring, Cincinnati, Chicago and Shakopee.
