October 30, 2025:
The kings of thrash are making history once again. Megadeth have announced they will include a powerful new cover of Metallica’s classic “Ride the Lightning” on their upcoming studio album, set for release in January 2026.
This groundbreaking moment marks the first time Megadeth has officially covered a Metallica song, bringing the story full circle for frontman Dave Mustaine, who co-founded Metallica before forming Megadeth in 1983.
Mustaine spoke to Rolling Stone about his decision to include "Ride the Lightning" on Megadeth's final record.
"It wasn't really that I wanted to do my version. I think that we all wanted it to turn out a certain way and for me, this was about something so much more than how a song turns out. It was about respect."
Fans can expect Megadeth’s rendition of Ride the Lightning to be heavier, faster, and sharper than ever — a fitting tribute to the roots of thrash metal and the legacy of two of the genre’s most influential bands.
The upcoming album will also feature brand-new original tracks that celebrate Megadeth’s four-decade legacy, combining their signature technical aggression with renewed energy and purpose.
